Printopolis, Open Studio, Toronto, Oct 21 - 24, 2010I leave tomorrow for Toronto to attend
Printopolis, a 4-day symposium with an international focus on contemporary printmaking being presented by Open Studio. I am looking forward to participating in the panel sessions, artist talks and printmaking demonstrations and viewing the exhibitions highlighting contemporary print media works. I cannot resist mentioning that along with the printmaking students of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, I organized a public printmaking event called Printopolis? in March 2009! It was a great success and I have posted pictures from the event on my website under professional activities.

Info from the website:
Printmaking is a paradigmatic artmaking process with the potential of recording all stages of the creative process. For artists, it exists as a living media not as an obsolete manufacturing process. Mark/Remarque will examine traditional and digital print processes (marks), critical discourse important to the field (remarks), and consider the concepts associated with the historical print term remarque: rarity, testing, concept amplification, and boundary extension.
The conference is timed to coincide with Philagrafika 2010, an international festival of contemporary art focusing on artistic practices that engage the visual, intellectual, and creative frontiers in printmaking. Galleries and museums throughout Philadelphia will host print exhibitions. Of interest to all conference participants with be Philagraphikas centerpiece exhibition: The Graphic Unconscious, which will present the pervasive role of the print in contemporary artistic production.

Making a Four-Colour Copper Plate Photogravure
This past week I created my first four-colour copper plate photogravure with the generous help of Marlene MacCallum and David Morrish. It was exciting and very intense, having just finished the workshop the week before, but we were able to integrate new knowledge and research into the process and all three of us came away with great looking plates. I am currently working on figuring out the correct colour balance and plate order and then I will post the print along with some images from the workshop.

Four-Colour Photogravure Workshop at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College
Visual artists Marlene MacCallum, David Morrish, and Pierre LeBlanc conducted a workshop on four-colour photogravure at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. The trio created the Sequential Imaging Laboratory or Sillis and in 2007 was awarded a multi-year Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada Research/Creation Grant for their project Creating the Visual Book Through Integration of the Divergent Technologies of Photogravure and Digital Processes. In their research, they explore how historical and contemporary technologies co-exist and expand on each others limitations. The impact of integrating the different tools/technologies is considered in all stages of the work, from the initial genesis through to transmission to the audience and its reception. This workshop marked the halfway point in their research and is part of the knowledge mobilization/dissemination of the project.
The invited participants were David Scott Armstrong from York University - Toronto, Mark Bovey from NSCAD University - Halifax, Steven Dixon from University of Alberta - Edmonton, Nancy Fox from University of Toronto and Asa Muir-Harmony from Crown Point Press - San Francisco. Also contributing to the workshop were Rachel Anstey and myself as research assistants. During the five day workshop the group went through the entire process of creating a four-colour photogravure from the starting point of a digital file to the final stage of a traditionally printed four-colour photogravure print.

PRINTOPOLIS? 2009
The printmaking students at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College believe that art is the heart and soul of every community. To that end, they are hosting an all ages public printmaking event on March 27th, 2009, between 4:30 pm 7:30 pm, at the Fine Arts Building Atrium and Print Studio.
Everyone is invited to come and participate or just observe the students employing and demonstrating a variety of traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques including: etching, drypoint, photogravure, woodcut, linocut, stone lithography, monotype, water-based silkscreen and digital approaches. The students will be giving away their printed artworks while supplies last. As well, works by the student artists will be displayed to exemplify the vitality of printmaking today. There will be light snacks and refreshments and music. Ultimately, the students hope to foster the vitality of printmaking and to promote understanding, awareness of, and participation in making prints by students and community members.
